EXCURSIONS
There are many boat trips between the islands. For instance people can take a trip from Sal and visit the island of Santiago and enjoy a half-day trip to Praia, its capital where people can visit the Cidade Velha (Old City), which was the first town, built by the Portugese on the islands.

While on Sal it is worth visiting the Pedro Lume salt mines after which the island is named. They are dramatically contained inside the vast Caldeira of a long extinct volcano. The mines produced salt for much of the former Portugese Empire and because of this salt, the seas salinity level is on a par with the Dead Sea and is well worth experiencing.

WINDSURFING
Santa Maria has some of the best windsurfing waters in the world. There is a windsurfing centre located on the beach where you can get lessons.

SURFING
The island of Sal has constant Alantic breezes blowing in from the north which make it an ideal location for windsurfing. International surfing competitions take place on Ponta Preta beach because of the excellent conditions. There are various places around many of the islands where surfing and body boarding centres can be found.

DIVING
Local dive schools are located in Santa Maria on Sal where instruction and equipment can be booked. Diving is becoming very popular in Cape Verde because of the tropical waters, which are home to canyons, caves, a variety of marine life, and shipwrecks are also dotted around the islands.

FISHING
Fishing is a popular pastime in Cape Verde with various activities available. Fishing centres can be found on Sal and the other islands and fishing trips can be organized. Hiring equipment for those who want to go it alone is difficult at the moment but this is sure to change in the near future.
